Since we left early from our inn so that we can see Mt. Mayon without any clouds covering it, we haven't had a chance to grab breakfast yet. Since we are quite near the town of Camalig, and it's just a short jeepney ride away from Cagsawa Ruins, we decided to head there as it is the home of one of Bicol's specialty which is pinangat.
But what is pinangat anyway? Pinangat is a dish that is a blend of chili, dried fish and coconut milk wrapped in taro leaves and tied securely with coconut leaf. Sounds familiar? Well it is called Laing back in Manila. But believe me, this one is very different than the ones you can buy in Manila.
Upon reaching Camalig, you'll be surrounded with Pinangat restaurants everywhere. Whichever side of the road you look, there is a restaurant which serves Pinangat. Though searching Google on which one is the best, we were led to this one restaurant called Let's Pinangat. It is just beside the hi-way and you can just ask the jeepney driver to drop you off there.
The place isn't that big and the scenery is all too familiar as it just looks like a generic carinderia. I was looking at the displayed foods on the glass case and I was thinking to myself, where is the pinangat? I thought they don't have anymore left, but when I ordered for one, the attendant went to the side of the case where there there is large pot, and inside it contains the delicious goodness of pinangat.
The serving is huge, I mean seriously huge. The pinangat costs only P40 and P15 for one cup of rice. Two of us shared and yet we were still unable to finish the whole thing. It does have a similar feel with laing but it seems that pinangat has more of creamy taste, maybe because it has more coconut milk ingredient than laing.
With an affordable price, a huge serving, and a special taste, you can't miss out on pinangat if ever you're in the Bicol region! Anyways, it's almost time to head back to the airport, but I am still not content! It's time for desserts!
