Cebu City Historical Trail

Our third day was spent well, after our whaleshark watching in Oslob and the exploration of Sumilon Island, we went back to Cebu City. We depart from the town of Oslob at around lunchtime and arrived at almost sunset in Cebu City.

We immediately scout for a place to stay and left there our luggages and started to tour around Cebu City, our first stop is the Basilica del Sto. Nino church. It was first established back in 1565 by some Augustinian Fathers and was burned down the next year. And said it was rebuilt and was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt again and again.

This church was the center of some people with so much devotion. I remember when my Lola and I have watched the tragedy happened in Bohol earthquake last year (2013) and affected some part of Cebu which included this church, she was telling me of this Basilica del Sto. Nino that was one of the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines. This tragedy brought some damages, there were cracks and the belfry and facade was mostly destroyed so it was still under renovation when we went there.

Our next stop was the Magellan's cross. It was planted there and was order by Ferdinand Magellan when he arrived in the Philippines. They said that the original cross was inside that wooden cross to prevent tourists/people from chipping away some parts of the cross as their souvenirs and maybe some of them believed that it has healing powers, but others also believed that the original cross was being destroyed way back after Magellan's death.

We walked then to Plaza Independencia. It has garden filled with some kinds of ornamentals and trees, you can stay here and feel relaxed and have some unwinding session. Its public park and a place where to have a quick break from the busy city. An obelisk at the center that you can see in the picture is dedicated to Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.

Just a few meters away from Plaza Independencia is this Fort San Fedro. It is the oldest and smallest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines. It serves as a military defence structure that was ordered to be built by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.

The triangular fort has 3 sides, 2 sides facing the sea and one side facing the land. Three bastions were named San Miguel(NE), La Consolacion(SW), and Ignacio de Loyola(SE).

Sugbu Chinese Musuem

It was getting dark, we just passed by the Malacanang sa Sugbo and this Sugbu Chinese Museum. We don't know if we could still enter the musuem but we didn't mind because we know it might be closed already since its late. We also don't know if the museum is open to public.

Colon Street

This Colon Street in Cebu was named after Christopher Columbus and was the smallest and oldest national road in the Philippines. Well as of today, this is where they can find some tiangge, bargain finds, fashionable shops, and others. This reminds me so much of Divisoria in Manila, especially Divisoria's Midnight Market.
